Petra Heldt has an MA in Christian theology from the Kirchliche Hochschule Berlin, and a PhD from the Hebrew University Jerusalem. She is an ordained pastor of the Protestant Church in Berlin. Heldt is a Professor of History of the Churches in the Middle East at the Jerusalem University College, Jerusalem. She is the Director of the Ecumenical Theological Research Fraternity in Israel which, since 1966, extends Christian relationship with Jews, Judaism and Israel and serves as a catalyst in Christian-Jewish dialogue worldwide. Heldt is a published author. She has won numerous prizes from Jewish and Christian institutions in Israel, Great Britain, and Germany.
